H1N1 and Novartis Vaccines inititatives
On June 11, 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) raised the worldwide pandemic alert level for the spread of the influenza A(H1N1) virus (commonly called swine flu) to Phase 6. A Phase 6 rating indicates that a global pandemic is underway.1
Novartis Vaccines is working with health authorities around the world, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), on developing a strong and effective response to the A(H1N1) flu pandemic.
Novartis Vaccines completes production of the first quantity of A(H1N1) vaccine. (Not for commercial sale.)
A(H1N1), sometimes called the swine flu, is a new pandemic virus that has never before circulated among humans. It is not related to previous or current human seasonal influenza viruses.1
Novartis has successfully completed production of the first amount of the Influenza A(H1N1) vaccine for clinical trials.
We are using egg-based manufacturing in Liverpool, UK, and Siena, Italy, to increase the likelihood of the greatest possible supply.
Novartis has received orders from more than 30 countries for supplies of A(H1N1) vaccine ingredients, including the largest purchase order by the US Department of Health and Human Services for antigen and adjuvant.
